At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
