The feeling at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.
Matteo's Unexpected Return
At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
