The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
