Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
